August 20: Gold Gains While Silver Slips

The Metals:

 

Gold fell $14.34 to $1352.26 in Asia, but it then climbed to as high as $1377.00 in New York and ended with a gain of 0.34%. Silver slipped to $22.28 in Asia before it rebounded to as high as $23.301 by a little after 10AM EST, but it then drifted back lower into the close and ended with a loss of 0.69%.

 

Euro gold fell to about €1022, platinum gained $7.70 to $1514.20, and copper remained at about $3.33.

 

Gold and silver equities rose over 3% in the first hour of trade and remained near that level for the rest of the day.

The Economy:

 

There were on major economic reports today. Tomorrow at 10AM EST brings Existing Home Sales for July expected at 5,100,000.

Oil fell along with the U.S. dollar index on uncertainty about fed tapering that sent treasuries higher.

 

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P traded mostly slightly higher on better than expected sales reports from various retailers.

 

Among the big names making news in the market today were Medtronic, J.C. Penney, Barnes & Noble, Ally, Best Buy, Home Depot, and Tesla.
